Here’s a simple recipe for homemade doughnuts:
Ingredients:
- 2 1/4 teaspoons (1 packet) active dry yeast
- 1/4 cup warm water (around 43°C)
- 1 cup warm milk
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 large egg
- 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- Vegetable oil for frying
For the Glaze:
- 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
- 2-3 tablespoons milk
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions:
- Activate Yeast: In a small bowl, combine the yeast and warm water. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it’s foamy.
- Mix Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the yeast mixture, warm milk, sugar, salt, melted butter, and the egg. Mix well. Gradually add the flour, mixing until a dough forms.
- Knead: On a lightly floured surface, knead the dough for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place it in a greased bowl, cover with a towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours until doubled in size.
- Shape the Doughnuts: Once the dough has risen, roll it out on a floured surface to about 1/2 inch thick. Use a doughnut cutter or two round cutters (one large, one small for the hole) to cut out doughnuts and holes.
- Fry the Doughnuts: Heat oil in a deep pot to 180°C (350°F). Fry the doughnuts in batches, 1-2 minutes per side, until golden brown. Remove them with a slotted spoon and place on a paper towel-lined plate to drain.
- Make the Glaze: In a bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla until smooth.
- Glaze the Doughnuts: Dip the warm doughnuts into the glaze, covering them completely or halfway, depending on preference. Let them sit on a rack to allow the glaze to set.
Enjoy your homemade doughnuts!
